Rugs Hooking

Rugs hooking is the technique that results in a looped pile fabric, tapestry or rug. The hook, that is used in rugs hooking, is very similar to a crochet hook. The handle, with the inserted hook, is used to pull strips of narrowly cut fabric from the back up to the front of the item that is being created.

The strips from loops look like laces in rugs hooking. Generally woolen fabric is used in traditional rug hooking, although in some geographic areas the use of woolen yarn was common. The fabric strips are pulled through a backing, usually burlap, on which a design or a picture has been drawn.

There are a vast variety of different styles of rugs hooking. The result of some is finely shaded, naturalistic flowers, fruits and scrolls, which were so popular in the middle of the twentieth century. Other styles feature more modest, folk-art style, associated with country decor. The difference is achieved by fabrics’ manipulations and artistic vision of a craftsman.
