Hooked Rugs
Hooked rugs are beautiful examples of hand-made rugs. A very interesting technique results in a looped pile fabric, tapestry or rug. The hook, which is used to create hooked rugs, has much in common with a crochet hook. Craftsmen insert the hook into a wooden handle. The handle is used to pull narrow strips of a fabric from the back up to the front of the item that is being created.
The strips from loops look like ribbons in resulting hooked rugs. Generally woolen fabric is used in traditional hooked rugs, although in some geographic areas the use of woolen yarn was common. The fabric strips are dragged through a backing, commonly burlap, on which an ornament or a picture has been drawn.
There are a vast variety of different styles of hooked rugs. The result of some of them is vividly shaded, realistic flowers, fruits and scrolls, which were so popular in the middle of the twentieth century.
Other styles of hooked rugs feature somewhat primitive, folk-art style, associated with the country decor. You will be satisfied with hooked rugs during the years.
